“GET ER DONE”

(excerpted from Red Neck Devotion)

by Ky M. Bishop

Philippians 1:3-6

3 I thank my God every time I remember you. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. (NIV)

For most of the hard working redneck class, the goal for each working order is to “get er done”. The reason for even starting a job, or for having a job, is to “get er done”, so that you can go on to something else more enjoyable.

For example, the reason for cutting wood is to provide fuel for heating, therefore from the moment you start the job, you are already mentally preparing for putting away your tools, and enjoying the warmth the wood will bring to your home.

From the moment you begin working on your vehicle, the goal is to get that vehicle running so that you don’t have to walk, and can enjoy the luxury of having transportation. When the first tool is placed under the hood, the goal is seen as the completion of the repair and the use of that vehicle.

For the redneck worker, the moment that the clock is punched at their daily job, preparation is being made for enjoying the pay check at the end of the week. The goal is the completion of their responsibility so that they can enjoy the fruits of their labor.

“Get er done”, is not just a redneck phrase, it is a redneck way of life. All of life is about the completion of whatever task is at hand.

Today’s scripture reminds us that even Jesus had a “get er done” mentality. From the moment that God (Jesus) arrived on this earth in human form, He was all about completing the job that He was sent to do.

There are many scriptures that demonstrate Jesus’ desire to get the job done that He was sent to do. For example, in John 6:38, we read “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” And even His last words while dying for the sins of the world demonstrate that He came to complete the work that He was sent to do; John 19:30 “Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, " It is finished!" And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.”

The work of Jesus Christ is a finished work. There is nothing more that we can add to it, nor is there anything that can be taken from it. Truly when He breathed His last breath and “gave up His spirit”, the job was done. And now, all we have to do is to rest and enjoy His “get er done” attitude.

When Jesus completed His work, He didn’t just sit down, kick His feet up on the coffee table and take a long nap with the eternal tuner in His hand. Philippians 1:6 is a reminder to us that when He finished His work, He joined you and I in the battle, and is helping us to complete the work we were sent to do. Since it is He, that began the good work in us, or more practically, gave the work order, He is faithful to compete that work in, by and through us. Instead of sitting by and watching us labor away, He is minute by minute joining us in the work He created us to do.

Jesus gives us another great example for accomplishing the work that we were sent to do. He not only came to complete the work that the Father sent Him to do, but as He was working, He enjoyed the labor. He was of course looking forward to the end, and to the completion of the job, but He did not allow the conclusion to crowd out the enjoyment of doing His job. He knew that there was “joy in the journey”, and that half the enjoyment in getting a job done, was in the doing.

Today as you go about doing the work that the Father has created you for, remember these things; 1. He created you for something specific, 2. He will do the work through you, 3. The work that He has for you has already been completed by Him, 4. He expects us to not only “get er done”, but to also enjoy the labor along the way.

Jesus has already gotten it done. You go and “get er done” too.
