“If you're a complainer, ride at the back of the pack so you won't contaminate the rest of the group”
(excerpted from Biker Devotion)
by Ky M. Bishop
1 Corinthians 15:33-34
33 Do not be deceived: "Bad company corrupts good morals." 34 Become sober-minded as you ought, and stop sinning; for some have no knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame. (NASU)
You’ve heard it said that “one bad apple doesn’t spoil the whole bunch”, however this is simply not true. When apples are placed in a container, the acid, vapors and other chemicals produced by decomposition will cause the other healthy apples to be contaminated and begin the process of rotting. Honestly, one bad apple can contaminate the whole bunch.
In an orchard when the fruit begins to rot, it signals to every insect within a ten mile radius that there is something to eat, and they all come running (flying). It is the same way with people that are rotting. When they begin to spread their poison, they send a signal to other rotten people, and they all come running to the feast.
Bikers know that one complainer can set into motion a whole host of complaints. One disgruntled, unhappy, contentious rider can make the whole experience a ride in Hades. Therefore, the complaining rider is invited, and encouraged to come along, but ride at the back of the pack.
Today’s scripture and Biker Phrase go hand in hand. As a matter of fact, the Biker phrase could have easily been borrowed from the Bible. The two are in agreement.
The Bible says that “bad company corrupts good morals”. We are foolish to think that it does not. We deceive ourselves when we say that there is no way that I will be contaminated by someone else’s corruption. We are confused to think that we are able to consistently surround ourselves with un-Godly people and expect to live Godly lives. It just cannot be done.
The encouragement is to be “sober-minded”, or more specifically, to think about our actions, attitudes and the people we surround ourselves with. We need to stop allowing every wind and every one to determine how we are going to live our lives. When we begin to make wise choices in life, then we will stop falling to every temptation and thereby to stop sinning.
1 Corinthians 15:34 also reminds us that when we become a good influence and stop being influenced, then those who don’t know about God will begin to accept our invitation to meet Him. It is our shameful behavior that has kept many from trusting God with their lives.
Another aspect of this phrase, and also the scripture is the concept of leadership. You will always want those at the front of the pack that are going to physically, spiritually and emotionally encouraging. The journey will always be much more productive when the leadership is positive, constructive and filled with purpose that is fueled by the greater good.
The best advice for the biker is to allow God to ride out in front of the pack. Your journey and the adventure will always be filled with miraculous moments when He is in control.
Allowing Him to lead will require total surrender; however, it is the best investment you will ever make. Surrendering your life to God through Jesus Christ will put Him at the front of the pack, and you in a very important leadership position.
On occasion it becomes easy to complain about the complainers. In an effort to try and fix someone else’s problem we become like them. When you find yourself in that position, then it is time to move yourself to the back of the pack along with the ones that you are complaining about.
The difficult thing in life is to stay focused. If you do not keep your eyes on the road, and your head in the game, then you stand the chance of becoming another roadside cross. The Bible says in Hebrews 12:1-3 “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
NASU
Today, be a leader. Ride at the front of the pack. And while you’re on the journey, try and encourage others to move from the back to the front. However, above all things, protect your position in Him.
