- The first Greek word is agoraz?, which means to buy a slave in the market place. This word is used in the following verses:
NAU 1 Corinthians 6:20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
NAU 2 Peter 2:1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.
NAU Revelation 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.
The slave market is this earth with all unsaved people being slaves of sin and thus Satan. After the fall of Adam, all the human race could rightfully expect would be punishment for its sins. However, God the righteous judge stepped down from His judgment throne and Glory in order to take upon Himself the guilt and penalty of human sin. He thereby satisfied His justice thus making it possible to give mercy on the basis of justice satisfied to all hell-deserving sinners. This mercy is given to those who put their faith in the Savior who died for them. This was Jesus, our Lord, who paid the price for sin’s penalty at Calvary. Those who trust in His blood, belong to Him as His bondslaves.
- The second Greek word is exagoraz?, which means to buy out of the slave market. This word is used in the following verses:
NAU Galatians 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us-- for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE "—
NAU Galatians 4:5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
Those saved are never to be put up for sale in any slave market again. They belong to Jesus forever!
- The third Greek word is lutro?, which means to set free by the payment of a ransom. This word is used in the following verses:
NAU Titus 2:14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.
NAU 1 Peter 1:18 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers,
The Lord’s bondservants are set free from sin and their old master Satan. This is so they can experience that for which God created them – fellowship with and service to God.
