Whenever you see an “if” or a “but”,
figure out what both sides of the sentence mean. For example, when
God says that you will not perish and have everlasting life in John
3:16, there is a pretty important “if” that we can’t
forget. “If you believe.”
If any sentence has a “therefore,” find
out what the therefore is there for. It always indicates that the
existence of the statement it is in is directly related to the subject
in the previous paragraphs and is a conclusion to a statement. Otherwise,
your interpretation will generally be way out of context with what
the Bible is truly saying.
WATCH OUT: If you find something that
no one else has ever seen before, you are probably off track. God
probably would not blind godly men and women to truth for almost
2,000 years and suddenly reveal it to you.
